15-Day Water Outages in Gauteng: What You Need to Know

Rand Water’s Maintenance Project

Rand Water has issued an alert to municipalities in Gauteng regarding the final phase of its extensive maintenance project. Starting on July 15, 2024, this critical phase will impact water supply across the region.

Maintenance Phases Recap

  • Phase 1 (June 22 – June 30): The initial phase focused on infrastructure maintenance.
  • Phase 2 (July 1 – July 13): Ongoing work continued during this period.
  • Phase 3 (July 15 – End of July): The upcoming phase will affect water availability.

Areas Affected

The maintenance efforts will target the Palmiet and Mapleton stations. Here’s what you need to know:

Palmiet System (July 15 – July 29)

  • On July 15, 2024, Palmiet will operate at 68% capacity for 50 hours.
  • On July 29, 2024, the system will run at 76% capacity for 40 hours.

Mapleton System (July 19 – July 29)

  • On July 19, pumping won’t be affected. However, two meters in the City of Ekurhuleni and three meters in the City of Tshwane will experience a 39-hour interruption.
  • On July 26, 2024, there will be no pumping for 77 hours.

Impact on Residents

  • Ekurhuleni: Residents in Thembisa, Kempton Park, Germiston, Alberton, Katlehong, Bedfordview, Edenvale, and Boksburg may experience water supply interruptions.
  • Tshwane: Suburbs in Tshwane will be impacted by both Palmiet and Mapleton maintenance during the specified dates.

Conservation Measures

During this period, households, businesses, and residents are urged to:

  • Avoid unnecessary water usage between 06h00 and 18h00.
  • Refrain from washing vehicles with hosepipes.
  • Not fill swimming pools.
  • Install low-flow showerheads and tap aerators.
  • Use dual-flush toilet cisterns.
  • Opt for indigenous or drought-resistant shrubs in gardens.
  • Clean driveways and patios with brooms instead of hosepipes.
  • Collect rainwater for reuse.
  • Cover swimming pools to reduce evaporation.
  • Choose short showers over baths.
  • Regularly check toilets and taps for leaks.

Stay informed through your municipality’s social media and news channels for updates during this maintenance period.
